Questions to ask a wedding venue before booking
VenueGuide.au recommends asking about availability, capacity, inclusions, access, weather backup, contracts and enquiry handling before booking a wedding venue. The goal is not a longer list. It is a clearer shortlist.
Start with fit, not decoration
A venue can look right and still fail the wedding brief. Before falling in love with photos, check whether the space works for the guest list, the ceremony format, dinner, speeches, dancing and older guests.
- What seated and cocktail layouts are realistic for our guest list?
- Can ceremony, photos, canapes and reception happen without awkward guest movement?
- What spaces are private, shared or visible to the public?
Ask for inclusions in plain language
Venue packages are difficult to compare unless each inclusion is explicit. Ask what is included, what is optional, and what must be supplied by an external vendor.
- Is furniture, linen, AV, security, cleaning, staffing and cake cutting included?
- What happens if we bring our own stylist, florist, celebrant, DJ or photographer?
- Are there minimum spends, service fees, corkage, bump-in fees or curfew costs?
Treat contract clarity as part of the venue
The ACCC explains that standard form consumer contracts are often offered on a take-it-or-leave-it basis. Couples should read booking terms before paying, especially cancellation, postponement and transfer rules.
- What is the deposit or booking fee, and what does it secure?
- What are the postponement, cancellation and date-transfer rules?
- Are any terms negotiable before the booking is signed?
